Harmonized System Codes

HS Codes are a standardized classification system used to categorize international trade goods. In the EcoChem system, you will be asked on the first page of adding a product to supply a Product Category and Category Code based on your product.

Clicking on the ‘Find Category’ button will open a new browser tab (www.tariffinder.ca/en/getStarted) to assist you in finding the code. On this page you will see a ‘Find tariff information’ model which will assist you in finding the correct code for your product.

After entering the information, the site will have a pop up which will ask you some qualifying questions about your product. In the case of our coat example, it will ask questions like ‘What type of coat is it?’, ‘How was it constructed?’, ‘What Gender or Life stage is the coat targeted for?’ and ‘What is the material composition of the coat?’. Once all questions have been answered, the module should return you with a code:

In the above example we can see our full code for our product is ‘6103.31.00.00’. Navigating back to the Ecochem portal, you can enter the first 6 digits ‘6103.31’ into the ‘Product category’ field, which will then autofill with the information we see in the above image.

Select your option from the autofill dropdown to populate the ‘Product Category’ Field. Then populate the ‘Category Code’ field with the full code given to you from the module. In our example, that code was ‘6103.31.00.00’
